The Years That Made Us Part 1 PDTV x264-W4F

Chris Masters debunks the myth that the Australian nation was forged at Gallipoli: it was what we did next that still defines who we are.

Episode 01
It's 1919 and Australia is reeling. Sixty thousand dead left in European soil and a nation tearing itself apart. Industrial violence, political extremism, 12% unemployment and a struggling rural economy are the backdrop for a new Federation fighting to survive. Into this maelstrom come three war heroes desperate for the peace they deserve. The first is a businessman, Stanley Melbourne Bruce; the second a famous general, Pompey Elliot; and the third a coalminer from the south coast of New South Wales, James 'Judy' Masters. These three men, through events in their lives, help tell the story of the 1920s - a story of tumult, conflict and change. Stanley Bruce will become Prime Minister, Pompey Elliot a senator, and Judy Masters will return to the mines while leading Australia as the captain of the national soccer team. Judy Masters is Chris Masters' great uncle, and through his life story Chris begins the journey of understanding extraordinary change. The big picture history of political conflict, radical social and technological change and economic re-invention is set against the story of a shy coal miner who starts a young family and in a very personal way seeks to recapture the promise of the 'Federation Dream', a fair go nation with equality for all.
