Queen Victorias Playlist
Petroc Trelawny and Suzannah Lipscomb introduce an evening of music to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birth. The Prom features the music of her favourite composer, Mendelssohn, including his ‘Scottish’ Symphony and First Piano Concerto, which will be performed by Stephen Hough on Victoria’s own piano, loaned by Her Majesty The Queen from the Royal Collection. There is also a suite from Arthur Sullivan’s ballet Victoria and Merrie England and songs composed by her consort, Prince Albert.

Pappano and the National Youth Orchestra of the USA
Celebrated American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato is reunited with regular collaborator Sir Antonio Pappano to mark the 150th anniversary of Berlioz’s death with a performance of the composer’s sumptuous orchestral song-cycle Les nuits d’été – a musical journey from springtime love to cruellest loss. The National Youth Orchestra of the USA undertakes a journey of quite a different kind in Strauss’s monumental An Alpine Symphony, whose vast orchestral forces and massive soundscapes conjure up the craggy drama of the Bavarian Alps, while the concert opens with 'Occidentalis' a new work by Benjamin Beckman, one of the NYO-USA’s two Apprentice Composers.

Mozarts Requiem
Love and loss, life and death collide in an emotionally charged concert given by Nathalie Stutzmann and the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales. Turbulent shifts of mood characterise Brahms’s Tragic Overture, and their ripples continue through the Prelude and Liebestod from Wagner’s powerful operatic exploration of forbidden love, Tristan and Isolde. At the heart of the programme, Mozart’s Requiem – the composer’s final work left unfinished at his early death and his musical epitaph. Soloists include former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists Fatma Said and Kathryn Rudge.

The Sound of Space
A Late Night Prom with a futuristic spin brings together some of the best sci-fi film music. Excerpts from cult soundtracks come together with recent works by Hans Zimmer and Mica Levi. The award-winning London Contemporary Orchestra – whose collaborators include Radiohead, Goldfrapp and Steve Reich – perform music from Under the Skin, Interstellar and the recent Netflix series The Innocents, among other titles, as well as from Alien: Covenant, whose soundtrack the LCO recorded.

Angelique Kidjo
Described as ‘the undisputed queen of African music’, three-time Grammy Award-winner Angélique Kidjo makes her Proms debut with her nine-piece band in a late-night tribute to the celebrated salsa songstress Celia Cruz. Kidjo grew up in Benin, West Africa, listening to salsa and found Celia Cruz a huge inspiration. She later discovered that much of Cruz’s music was inspired by Yoruba traditional songs that migrated from Benin to the Americas with the slave workers. Kidjo here reinvents these songs in the Afrobeat and juju styles of West Africa, reflecting their true origins.

Rachmaninov and Shostakovich
Death and darkness encounter light and new life in this Prom given by the BBC Philharmonic and its Chief Guest Conductor, John Storgårds. Two Russian classics brood on death and loss; Rachmaninov’s atmospheric The Isle of the Dead conjures an ominous scene – a ghostly ferryman transporting the souls of the dead to rest – while Shostakovich’s bitterly passionate Symphony No. 11 takes inspiration from the ‘Bloody Sunday’ massacre of 1905. But there’s light and hope in Outi Tarkiainen’s Midnight Sun Variations a celebration of rebirth in the perpetual day of an Arctic summer.

Mahler and Britten
Claudia Mahnke and Stuart Skelton are the soloists in Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde. This sweeping orchestral song-cycle is a powerful, personal statement of loss, orchestrated with infinite variety and skill. It’s paired with another mould-breaking work Britten’s Piano Concerto. Premiered at the Proms in 1938 with the 24-year-old composer as soloist the work is as much a celebration of orchestral texture as pianistic bravura, bursting with youthful energy and invention. Norwegian pianist and Proms regular Leif Ove Andsnes is the soloist.
