As well as being the composer of that Last Night favourite, Jerusalem, Hubert Parry was in many ways the father of contemporary English music, teaching both Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst. Tonight’s celebration of his legacy features Parry’s own hope-filled Fifth Symphony alongside Vaughan Williams’s elegiac The Lark Ascending and two memorials inspired by the First World War: Holst’s Ode to Death and Vaughan Williams’s Pastoral Symphony.

Daphne Oram’s visionary Still Point fills the cavernous space of the Royal Albert Hall for the first time in the premiere of a revised realisation based on recently discovered archive material. Composed in 1949 – almost a decade before Oram co-founded the BBC Radiophonic Workshop – the piece was possibly the first to combine a live orchestra with live electronic manipulations, here played via turntables. Still Point forms the centrepiece of a late-night sonic exploration that features work by Delia Derbyshire – another Radiophonic Workshop pioneer who achieved cult status for her electronic arrangement of the Doctor Who TV theme – as well as new works inspired by the Radiophonic legacy.

Romantic titans Schumann and Mendelssohn share the night's bill with a pair of phenomenal female composers who died 100 years ago - two talents whose lives were cut tragically short. Schumann's exuberant Fourth Symphony is the climax of this concert, which also includes sparkling work by Lili Boulanger, the first-ever female winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome, and the flamboyant Welsh composer Morfydd Owen. Owen's Nocturne is the perfect way for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales to mark its 90th anniversary year, and acclaimed French pianist Bertrand Chamayou performs Mendelssohn's First Piano Concerto - all under the baton of Thomas Sondergard.

A star-studded line-up of BBC Young Musician winners and finalists, including Nicola Benedetti, Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Emma Johnson, come together to celebrate the competition's fortieth anniversary.

BBC Young Musician has been a launch pad for the careers of young artists since it began in 1978, and the list of performers that have taken part reads like a who's who of British musicians. Over 20 of the competition's leading names join forces for an evening celebrating the competition's rich history, including Michael Collins, Nicholas Daniel, Natalie Clein as well as some of the rising stars of recent years: Laura van der Heijden, Martin James Bartlett and the current title-holder Lauren Zhang.

Presented by Clemency Burton-Hill and Josie d'Arby, the evening includes music by Saint-Saens, Ravel and Sir James MacMillan. There are also world premieres by David Bruce, Ben Foster and Iain Farrington, all with the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Andrew Gourlay.

BBC Proms 2018 launches with a feast for the eyes and ears in the world premiere of Five Telegrams, with music by Anna Meredith and stunning digital projections by 59 Productions marking the centenary of the end of the First World War. The all-British programme also features Vaughan Williams's pre-war choral masterpiece Toward the Unknown Region, along with Holst's evergreen Proms favourite The Planets - the first piece Mars, Bringer of War, famously anticipates the onset of mechanistic warfare.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Sakari Oramo and they are joined by the combined forces of the BBC Symphony Chorus, the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and the BBC Proms Youth Ensemble. An exciting fanfare for the season.

Chineke
Europe's first majority BME orchestra comes to the Proms for the first time. Chineke! was founded two years ago by double bassist Chi-chi Nwanoku, and is joined tonight by the brilliant young cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, soprano Jeanine De Bique and conductor Kevin John Edusei. Their captivating programme features music by legendary American composer George Walker and a world premiere by Hannah Kendall, alongside works by Dvorak, Handel and Rimsky-Korsakov.
