This episode focuses on the demands faced by the women and men who answer our cries for help; as well as the people who make these calls; and some vastly differing interpretations of what constitutes an emergency. Calls to the Wiltshire Police emergency control room have doubled in the last five years, and their ambulance service counterparts are also receiving record numbers of calls. Under ever-mounting pressure, call handlers must be able to concentrate equally on every conversation they have, dealing with the whole gamut of human emotions and experiences, whether genuine or otherwise. From managing abuse to delivering babies and hearing domestic abuse, victims of on-going medical emergencies and murderers, call handlers have to be prepared for everything, and their responses can make the difference between life and death.
