Plot: Roy Luther, widowed for four years, and his four children - Devola, Mary Call, Romey and Ima Dean - live in the shadows of the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina, they truly a product of the mountains. They used to own the land on which they now sharecrop, they believing Kiser Pease stealing it from them in he paying the back taxes which Roy Luther failed to pay. Devola, the romantic, took over the domestic duties of the household following her mother's passing. However, in Roy Luther knowing of his own imminent passing due to his poor health, he instructs fourteen year old Mary Call, as the practical one - as practical as a fourteen year old can be - to take over his role in the family following his passing, including not to call in any figure of authority in his distrust, and not to allow Devola to marry Kiser, who is sweet on her and Devola who would say yes if left to her own devices. Mary Call takes the directive literally in not informing anyone of authority of their father's passing in fear that she and her siblings would be separated in the foster care system. Trying to hide Roy Luther's death becomes difficult as more and more people want to speak to him, including Kiser in his continuing pursuit of Devola. But Mary Call has to decide how far to honor Roy Luther's dying wishes as she struggles to keep everything together, and as she herself is pulled in other directions.

Plot: Young Jimmy is being pursued by the evil Wilhemina W. Witchiepoo. More specifically, Witchiepoo is after Jimmy's small friend, a small solid gold diamond encrusted talking flute named Freddy. Witchiepoo knows that if she has Freddy in her possession, she will definitely be named Witch of the Year at the upcoming witch's convention. But Living Island is also a fantastical land of among other things talking animals, talking trees and talking winds. The mayor of Living Island is H.R. Pufnstuf, a talking dragon. Pufnstuf and his friends have to get Jimmy and Freddy off the island to their ultimate safety. Plot: Twenty-five year old African-American Bigger Thomas lives at home with his devout mother Hannah Thomas and his two younger siblings, Vera Thomas and Buddy Thomas, in an inner city Chicago tenement. While he has always had the proverbial American dream, he, due to his situation largely dictated by being black, has resorted to petty crime to survive, about which Hannah somewhat has her head in the sand. Through an employment agency on the vow that he has put his criminal life behind him, Bigger obtains a job as a chauffeur for the wealthy, white Dalton family. Although he doesn't see this job as his future, he does see it as a short term measure for a life with his girlfriend, Bessie Mears, a nightclub waitress with aspirations to be a singer. Much like Hannah looks the other way about Bigger's criminal life, Henry and Helen Dalton look the other way about their daughter, Mary Dalton, who isn't as innocent as they would like to think as she cavorts with Jan Herlone, Mary and Jan proverbially slumming not only in their partying ways, but in their socialist beliefs. In helping Mary after a drunken evening out with Jan, Bigger, working on fear as a black man in an affluent white environment, ends up accidentally killing Mary. This act only begins a series of similar such acts of Bigger working on fear of not being treated fairly in being black regardless of the truth, he in the process only digging himself deeper into a hole.
