The mountaineer’s trek through the Burmese jungle faces an unexpected diversion when the first free elections in the country since 1990 trigger unrest, and force Joe to divert his journey to Bhamo, a small town north-east of Myanmar. The hills and ridges where his father fought during the Second World War are within sight, but he is not permitted to go there. Once the chaos settles, Joe and his guide Ed Stafford continue their mission, following a river to the settlements and battlefields where Allied special forces clashed with the Japanese military. He meets villagers who still remember the Chindits, and visits the spot where his father’s commanding officer was beheaded by an enemy combatant, and the experience provides him with a deeper respect for what Lt Ian Simpson accomplished.
