Encoders are different to cappers. Almost all encoders here are robot scripts using a set of rules that just repeat any mistakes that the original capper/capturer makes. So a soft capture becomes a soft re-encode, and a wrong frame rate just gets repeated.

It requires an actual human to determine the best source, the correct frame rate, see the image is soft, know how to enhance it, how to fix the myriad of other f-ups these rookie cappers are making and produce the best possible final encode. Once upon a time there used to be a bunch of those experienced manual encoders. Now you can count them on less than one hand.

There is a high res and even image enhanced encode here in the correct frame rate with manually synchronized and edited subs and it could never ever have been created by setting anything to “auto” as it was created using a single string command of text with about a dozen manually typed commands.

I’m a fairly good encoder. I guess my confusion comes from the fact that whoever is doing the encodes can set the frame rate to “auto”. In my script I’ve left it blank. Blank=auto.
As to the capture or rip, as I see it (with no practical experience) it’s captured or ripped at the correct frame rate. The original release would not be at the wrong frame rate would it?
So, with that in mind the encoder seems to be at fault.
Even an automated script can be edited or updated cant it? Otherwise why bother?

Absolutely all scripts can be edited. There are two main parts to the problems you see in cases like this.

The first is that all releases need to be considered as two parts. The parent (source) and the children (encodes). Every release you see for a show is either one or the other. Usually the parent is 1080p x264 or higher. Encoders then use that source file to create all lower resolutions and x265 releases. The parent source is from the capper and the encodes are from encoders.

How the source file is obtained is the two methods you mention – capture or rip, but these have long gotten confused by many people. A rip is where you take an actual digital stream, either a direct file download or directly from the binary digital file being sent to the browser by a streaming service. A capture is where you literally capture the image on your screen using a screen capture program and separately the audio being decoded by the computer.

With a rip you have the exact copy of the show as sent from wherever you got it. But with a capture you need to manually set EVERY parameter in the screen capture program correctly. In many cases like here standard US frame rates 23.97 or 23.976 get wrongly used on UK/AUS/NZ shows that are 25 fps by people that dont understand why it stuffs the end result – bad sync, stutter etc etc (long list). AND on top of that bad capture settings very easily create soft images, plus all capture quality is down to the quality of the capture software and a lot of them are garbage.

Then the second part is the encoding and yes you can set any encode script to fix or at least improve these problems. But long ago the SCENE became all about speed over quality – and so now almost all the encodes are done by all groups using a bunch of automated scripts that do EVERYTHING (find source, encode, rename and post). And they literally DO use defaults as you mention – meaning all they ever do is COPY all the mistakes in the source. Worst of all nothing at all ever is checked before it is posted.

All my encodes concentrate on quality vs size (ie best quality for smallest size), over speed. That is why I use x265 as x264 is utter dinosaur bloatware that the world no longer needs. Everything is done manually, checking all the parameters and quality of the source, then manually scripting each encode. The bots couldn’t hope to do what I do as they would need to be checking all manner of things and quality etc is subjective. Even under AI the rules would have to be very smart and frankly most encoders now are just “dumb” because they never actually encode, so they probably couldn’t even write the scripts.

On the other hand all the robot scripts put stuff out at speed which I cant do, and they cover all the releases which I also cant do. So there is a trade off. Unfortunately one of those is that the more obscure releases are often the most problematic.

Thanks. I only understood about 10% of that last message. I spent several hours last night trying to work out code that would set the frame rate correctly while dropping duplicate frames from the original. Didn’t work as I’d hoped.
It’s just that all these BBC or ABC shows etc. are at 25 fps, but we’re getting 29.97 which is something you rarely see even in US videos. Plus, you’re right, the overall quality is crap on most.
Downloaded from several sources here looking for any with the proper frame rate. Didn’t find many, but I did find one that uses old DivX type encode settings. Makes you wonder.
Anyways, I’m keeping an eye out for Slartibartfast uploads as I know I can trust your encodes will be done right.

Yeah fair enough it was a lot as its complicated, but I dont like to try and make it simple off the bat as it really needs all the detail to do it properly.

The bottom line is once a source is captured wrong, there is only so much encoders can do to fix it and NONE of the automated scripts are going to ever try – which means 98% of all posts will be as screwed up as the master source. Only an experienced manual encoder is going to make any difference.

Transcoding frame rates like you are trying to code is a very messy job. And it’s only really possible if you have too many frames like here – if your source was captured at 25 and should be 29.97… you are truly fu…

If you want to get results that are about as good as you will ever get then FFMPG is what you need. It is open source and more powerful than pretty much anything out there. But it is not a gui, it is command line so there is a lot to read and learn.

Finally… the fps differences go waaaay back to when tvs were CRT (cathode ray tubes – the 4:3 square boxes). In those times the EU/AUS/NZ used the PAL video system and North America and Japan used NTSC. The differing video systems used different number of lines of resolution and different frame rates. When everything went digital the various areas had to keep making digital stuff at the same fps so that it was still compatible with old domestic tv sets in the 2000s etc. There is now no real reason for there not to be a single standard but once something is stuck its hard to get everything to change.

One other tip that saves time checking frame rates – some of the master posts will have a “”screenshot” link – all the ones here do for instance. These are auto created by RLSBB when they put up the main files and will always tell you the fps in each screenshot without having to dl them.
