Charmian begins an ill advised affair with Alan. After she becomes pregnant she can’t risk an abortion at a clinic and has to use a back street abortionist. She becomes really ill but manages to pull through. She the gets the news she’s been waiting for which is that Ron is planning to escape. She helps organize the escape by getting money to the gang helping Ron and giving herself a cast iron alibi by taking the children to Whipsnade Zoo. The escape attempt goes well and Ron becomes the country’s most wanted man. Charmian is watched by the police but she bides her time and finally, after being separated from him for almost a year, meets up with Ron in France. His appearance shocks her her, he has undergone crude and largely unsuccessful plastic surgery. Ton tells her that he is planning on them all starting a new life in Australia. It will cost him over half of his robbery money, but they will be able to turn over a fresh leaf in a country that asks no questions. Charmian arrives with the boys in Darwin a few months later but Ron is not there to meet her. After Ron finally turns up at her hotel he tells her it’s all been a misunderstanding. They soon settle into their new lives and Charmain gives birth to another child.
